Home-cooked diets need a real recipe

For the owner who wants to cook because it feels safer, fresher, or more loving.

The short version

What a veterinary team would hand you.

Home-cooked pet food: good intentions still need a balanced recipe

Cooking for your pet can be done, but the recipe needs to be complete and balanced. Meat, rice, vegetables, and love are not enough by themselves.

Pets need the right amounts of minerals, vitamins, fatty acids, protein, calories, and more. Puppies, kittens, and pets with medical conditions are especially easy to unbalance.

The longer version

The love is not the concern

Owners who want to cook are usually deeply invested. They want transparency, freshness, control, or a way to help a sick pet. That motivation deserves respect.

The risk is that home-cooked diets often look wholesome while missing essential nutrients or having the wrong mineral balance. Meat, rice, vegetables, and a multivitamin do not automatically make a complete diet.

Balance is more than ingredients

A complete recipe has to account for calories, protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, trace minerals, vitamins, fatty acids, fiber, and the pet's medical needs. Puppies, kittens, pregnant animals, and pets with kidney, liver, urinary, GI, or pancreatic disease need even more care.

Online recipes are frequently incomplete or vague. Small substitutions can change the nutrient profile more than owners expect.

How to do it safely

The safest route is a recipe formulated by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist or a reputable veterinary nutrition service, followed exactly. If the owner cannot follow the recipe consistently, a commercial complete diet may be safer.
