Treats count more than owners think

The gentle way to explain why "just a few treats" can overpower a careful feeding plan.

The short version

What a veterinary team would hand you.

Treats count - even when they feel small

Treats are part of your pet's daily calories. Biscuits, dental chews, table food, peanut butter, pill pockets, and training treats all count.

A good rule is to keep treats and extras under about ten percent of daily calories unless we give you a different plan. The rest should come from a complete and balanced food.

You do not have to stop showing love. We can keep the ritual and change the size, type, or daily budget.

Everything counts
Chews, scraps, and pill pockets are not calorie-free.
Keep it under ten percent
That protects the balanced diet from being crowded out.
Make one household plan
Everyone feeding "just one" is how the math breaks.

The longer version

Small extras become the diet

Most owners do not think of treats as part of the diet. They think of them as affection, training, apology, routine, or medication delivery. That is why treat calories are so easy to miss.

For a small dog or cat, a few bites can be the calorie equivalent of a person adding a large snack. The pet does not know those calories were "extra." The body counts them all.

The ten percent rule

A practical ceiling is to keep treats and extras under about ten percent of daily calories unless the veterinarian gives a different plan. That leaves the complete food doing the nutritional work and keeps treats from displacing balanced nutrition.

This includes biscuits, dental chews, lick mats, peanut butter, cheese, pill pockets, table scraps, training treats, and the "just one bite" from every person in the house.

Keep the ritual, change the unit

The goal is not to remove joy. Often we can keep the ritual while changing the treat size, using part of the measured meal as training rewards, choosing lower-calorie options, or making a household treat budget everyone follows.
